Hi My name is Maura Bawn. My first holiday of note was 1967. Five student nurses booked a holiday to Salthill in Galway in July staying in a caravan park. Money being very scarce, bright sparks decided to send luggage to Galway by train and hitch from Dublin. Four of us got the bus as far as Lucan, one girl was making her own way from Roscommon. Back to the hitchin’, we split into twos. Got on the best with all different types of lifts arriving into Galway that evening starving with hunger. Picked up our luggage and headed for Salthill, arrived at the caravan park and began to settle in. Got food in a shop and made a big meal while we still had a few bob, then off we set down town and discovered O Connor’s singing pub. Our holiday was made! Craic was mighty and we met two fellows from the North of Ireland who were down avoiding the 12th July. They had a car and all they wanted was to see the beautiful treasures of Connaught so we toured all over the sights of Connemara and Clifden returning to O’Connors to sing and dance the night away. It rained for most of the week but we didn’t feel a drop. What a week! Back to Dublin again, luggage sent by train. Those were the days!
