The weekend in Perpignan
Despite the Irish weather I went for a dip in the ocean, specifically those ten digits that help me keep my balance. The location was Canet beach. It involved two buses, a very inexpensive way to travel and time wise about 40 mins from the city centre. The stop is opposite Les Dames de France where a ‘one off’ character amused me, looking like a dj playing his favourite hip hop. This crane driver was preparing to replace a neon advertisement for Credit Agricole. He knew he had a captive audience in our bus queue.

The beach was worth seeing and it has green flag status. In Ireland we call this a blue flag. The surrounds are typical of summer holiday entertainment complete with fairground attractions for the madding crowd Personally I’m looking forward to exploring the pre-medieval port of Collioure and meantime my swimming will be in the local pool until temperatures rise.
Sunday
Today on the international day for women I ambled into Place de la République and was entertained by a mix of musicians who alternated on the stage. Suddenly I noticed a sign that said Écriture de Femmes. This was an opportunity for anyone who wished to be creative. The suggestion was to commence with the words ‘Si j’étais’…
‘If I were’… one could choose to be a bird, an animal, a tool, an element or whatever. I decided to be a key to reopen dance halls so that dancing could be recognised again as the great social activity and sport for all.
When I returned to my table I found myself in the company of members of an alternative political party and realised that the music was the draw for the impending election of a mayor of the city. The candidate being proposed in the place de la République was a young woman called Caroline known as an alternative left party candidate and ecologist. Well that would certainly be an alternative from the long list of male mayors that began in 1700.

Thanks Caroline- I’m no artist , just chanced my arm! Am delighted I got the ok to use the photos! The guy with the handlebars moustache gave me lots of information. Doesn’t he look so typically French? It was a fine afternoon and well worth the ramble.
They are brief but entertaining…..the key was a novel idea…..Anne the French is excellent. The book smeller was best of all. I must think of a story worth writing up and write it up. Will do soon.
Thats my favourite too Joan. Thanks for the comment. By the way my name is Lily Anne
