A Tour of the Historic Centre

Today I did a tour of the area close to Place de la Loge. It was good value for approx. €7.The tour was in French and included the interiors of various houses, including Hotel Pams now a conference centre. It was built between 1852 and 1872 around 1862 by Pierre Bardou one of the founders of the JOB cigarette paper company and transformed as a manor in 1890by his son-in-law, Jules Pams. Jules became the Minister of Agriculture and later Minister of the Interior at the beginning of the 20th century.. He was known as an amateur artiste. The tour was interesting but the art was not to everyone’s taste.

In Rue de la main de Fer was The House of Xanxo built at the beginning of the 16thcentury.  It is a now a museum and was once the home of an enterprising cloth merchant. It is one of the rare Gothic houses preserved in Perpignan.

I guess there are always ups and downs when adjusting to new places. The ups on this day included the views from the terrasse on the fourth floor of GaleriesLafayette, my discovery of simple handmade earrings in Cré-Actifs du 66, Place Gambetta and the downs included the bitter cold 3° that permeated my bones throughout the tour

* The JOB brand was formed by the founder’s initials separated by a diamond representing Perpignan, J♦B.  The business became known as JOB.
